So we were watching My Kitchen Rules on Hulu the other night, and one of the competing couples made Asian Turkey Meatballs. It Sounded. So. Good. So I had to make them. I figured I had a vague idea of what should go in them but wasn’t sure about ratios etc. Trusty Google came to the rescue as always. I found a recipe where the picture drew me in (yes, it’s that important – just like website design, but that’s a rant for a whole different blog) and then just modified it to better suit my nutritional needs (yes, that’s a thing).
My husband and I eat very differently now (he does a ketogenic diet and I do more of a low fat variety) so I tried to get the carbs lower for him, but it’s definitely more low fat than anything else. The meatballs are very filling. I ate 1/2 the recipe and was very full (and that’s 1/2 pound of ground turkey). I plated mine with some basmati rice and some sauteed bok choy. #Amazaballs as my friend Tara would say. Oh, and I doubled the meatballs to sauce ratio, because when I originally made it, it felt like there was a lot of unused sauce left in the bowl after I tossed and plated.
Makes 32 meatballs
Ingredients
- 2 pounds extra lean ground turkey
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 2 tbsp garlic paste
- 2 tbsp ginger paste
- 2 whole green onion, both green and white parts
- 2 large egg
- 4 tablespoon low sodium soy sauce
Asian Sauce
- ¼ cup hoisin sauce
- ⅛ cup low sodium soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- green onions for serving, if desired
- sesame seeds for serving, if desired
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- Add turkey, breadcrumbs, garlic, green onions, egg, sesame oil and soy sauce. Mix with your hands until combined.
- Grease a baking sheet with oil (I used a layer of aluminum foil, which I greased, because I am lazy and hate scrubbing baking sheets).
- Portion out 32 meatballs. (I used a cookie scooper and then adjusted so all of the meatballs were the same weight. Yes, I used a scale.)
- Place meatballs on the oiled baking sheet and cook for 20 minutes or until fully cooked, flipping halfway through.
- Take out of the oven and toss with the Asian sauce.
- Serve immediately and garnish with green onions and sesame seeds, if desired.
Asian Sauce
Add all of the ingredients to a medium bowl and stir to combine. Set aside until meatballs are done cooking.
